Answering Questions You May Have

1. Where is Jen Hughes Counseling?

Many appointments take place virtually, but I'm also willing to meet out in quiet cafes or in your home. I also enjoy driving to nearby colleges and meeting with several students or families back-to-back.

2. What is Your Approach to Counseling?

The longer I practice the more I blend industry-informed professional research with a deepening Biblical understanding. As we work together, you can know I will be praying for you and studying on your behalf.

Together you can expect us to address your spiritual, mental, physical, emotional, and relational needs, determine your best goals, and work together to reach them.

3. How Long Does Counseling Last?

A counseling session is typically half an hour (for some youth) to one hour, and meeting together can span anywhere from a one-time consultation to having me available for regular support and input.

4. How Do I Know If I Could Benefit From Counseling?

We can email back and forth for a bit as we each pray and decide if we are a right fit at this time.  Also please see this article I wrote on the different kinds of professionals available for emotional and mental well-being.

5. What Topics Do You Commonly Address?

It's comforting to know that I've walked with counselees facing:

  • academic pressures
  • adjusting to new life stages
  • anxiety & OCD
  • attachment issues
  • changes to family
  • conflict resolution
  • crisis intervention
  • cultural pressures
  • depression
  • doubts about faith
  • eating issues
  • emotional regulation & maturity
  • mood & personality disorders
  • relationships
  • identity & self-worth development
  • mental obsessions
  • parenting
  • perfectionism
  • school success
  • shame
  • spiritual development
  • stress management
  • victimization
  • grief
  • trauma

If your primary motivation for counseling wasn't on the list, that's okay. The above is just a starting place to say I've seen a lot and understand how difficult life can be at times -- in all things I believe there is a sovereign God who has great things in store.

6. Do You Work With Young Children?

I do not often work with young children and the ones I do are usually 9 and older but am open to discussing your young child’s needs.

7. What Are Your Qualifications?

I was an at-home mom for 10 years before applying to grad school to attain a master's degree in Christian counseling. The feedback I've received especially from parents is how much they appreciate that I've raised kids of my own before I help their family. My degree was attained from Liberty University and I am Board Certified (not state licensed) as a Christian counselor. I operate more like a church-based counselor, but by having private practice I see many people from many denominations and various stages of faith. Also, I do not work with the court system in any capacity. I operate more like a church-based counselor, but by having private practice I see many people from many denominations and various stages of faith.

I am so proud and honored to receive continued education with the renown CCEF (Christian Counseling Education Foundation) organization, the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC), and I pursue accountability from several peer colleagues in ministry.

I am also a professional member of Association of Biblical Counselors, Biblical Counseling Coalition, and Christian Counseling Education Foundation.

"Jen's advice is incredibly practical for the everyday battle, and it always points me back to God's power instead of my own."

8. How Much Do Your Services Cost?

Appointments are $100/hour and I do not accept insurance.

9. What If I've Never Been To Counseling Before?

It's my job to help you feel comfortable and help you feel that your appointment was a great use of your time. I'm accustomed to working with nervous first-time counselees, reluctant teens, etc.

Please know you've been prayed for before you even arrive; during our time together; and well after you leave.

10. What Are Your Beliefs And Their Role In Counseling?

I eagerly align with the belief statement on the CCEF website.
