1. Where is Jen Hughes Counseling?
All of my appointments are virtual, either by phone or video. I work very flexible hours, and will accommodate time differences all over the world.
2. What is Your Approach to Counseling?
After over a decade of practice, my approach is based on experience, continued education, and time in prayer and Scripture. I also seek to join you in following God’s will for your situation. Together you can expect us to address your spiritual, mental, physical, emotional, and relational needs, determine your best goals, and work together to reach them. I can also make suggestions if you need a referral for more clinical care.
3. How Long Does Counseling Last?
Each session is typically an hour but longer can be requested. I meet with some counselees for just one session and other families I’ve worked with on and off for multiple years.
4. How Do I Know If I Could Benefit From Counseling?
Please email me and we can go back and forth until we know if we would be a good fit!
5. What Topics Do You Commonly Address?
It's comforting to know that I've walked with counselees facing:
- academic pressures
- adjusting to new life stages
- anxiety & OCD
- attachment issues
- changes to family
- conflict resolution
- crisis intervention
- cultural pressures
- depression
- doubts about faith
- eating issues
- emotional regulation & maturity
- mood & personality disorders
- relationships
- identity & self-worth development
- mental obsessions
- parenting
- perfectionism
- school success
- shame
- spiritual development
- stress management
- victimization
- grief
- trauma
If your primary motivation for counseling wasn't on the list, that's okay. The above is just a starting place to say I've seen a lot and understand how difficult life can be at times -- in all things I believe there is a sovereign God who has great things in store.
6. Do You Work With Young Children?
I do not, but find that helping you as parents is often a better return on investment since you’re the one with your child day in and day out.
7. What Are Your Qualifications?
I’ve worked with individuals, families, and churches for over a decade. I was an at-home mom for 10 years before attending online grad school for Christian counseling. I am now a parent of two young adults in their late 20’s and work with many other parents in similar life stages. My degree was attained from Liberty University and I’m Board Certified (not state licensed) as a Christian counselor. I operate similarly to a church-based counselor, but by having private practice I see many people from many denominations and various stages of faith. Also, I do not work with the court system in any capacity. I receive ongoing continuing education as well as learn from other practicing counselors.
8. How Much Do Your Services Cost?
My fee is $125/hour and I do not take insurance and cannot provide any insurance codes.
9. What If I've Never Been To Counseling Before?
It's my job to help you feel comfortable and help you feel that your appointment was a great use of your time. I'm accustomed to working with nervous first-time counselees, reluctant dads and sons, etc. Men quickly appreciate that I’m solution-based and respect their role as head of home. Please know you've been prayed for before you even arrive; during our time together; and well after you leave. And if I’m not a good fit, we can help you find services elsewhere! I want you to be where the Lord leads you.
10. What Are Your Beliefs And Their Role In Counseling?
I honor your beliefs trusting that we’re all Christians and even if we have some minor differences in how we worship, they likely aren’t relevant to counseling. If we ever feel that our beliefs aren’t well-aligned, we can help you find someone who is a better match. Ultimately, I want to obey the Lord, glorify Christ, and follow the Spirit’s leading to serve you well.
