Baby Steps out of Apathy
Hurt, loss, illness, circumstances, exhaustion, and so many other things can bring you to an utter halt. You may be aware of activities that would bring you purpose and joy again, but they feel out of reach. There are “down-and-out” examples in Scripture too. Sold into slavery, Joseph found energy to continue personal growth as he acknowledged the Lord’s presence (Genesis 39:2). Running for his life, Elijah needed to eat and drink before he could keep going (1 Kings 19:8). Preparing for a dangerous meeting with the king, Esther invited her closest companions to fast and pray with her (Esther 4:16). Constantly barraged with accusations, Jesus spoke Scripture aloud (Mark 7:6, Luke 21:15). Unlawfully imprisoned, Paul and Silas sang hymns (Acts 16:25). Fast-forward to today, paraplegic, Joni Eareckson Tada, sings to Jesus when the pain is too unbearable to sleep, which she probably learned from Paul and Silas! Activities that restore me are serving with creativity, beauty, submission, and femininity, modeled after the Proverbs 31 Woman (Proverbs 31:10-31). What baby steps out of apathy and gathered from Scripture can you have at the ready?
