Setting up a reality check

Setting up a Reality Check

When my husband was learning to drive in the U.K. (on the “wrong side” of narrow, winding roads), he needed to work unusually hard to keep the vehicle in the center of the lane. My job as passenger (on the “wrong side” of the car) was to provide announcements (with gentleness and not screaming panic) when he was drifting too close to the side of the road. Before long, my mind and body began to have a constant sensation that we were about to hit the curb, even if we weren’t. I needed to check our actual placement inside the lane, not just go with my hunch. The Holy Spirit used this sensory experience to remind me that trusting my feelings can cause me to draw inaccurate conclusions. Apparently, I’m not the only one who needs this humble reality check. Podcaster and pastor’s wife, Jordan Sparks, confesses that she often checks with her husband, “This is how I’m feeling. Is this feeling real?” and his frequent and sure reply is: “100% NO. That feeling is not reality.” Instinct (“I sense the car is drifting”) and worldly advice (“of course all your feelings are legitimate and realistic”) are both quite unreliable, so let no one deceive himself (1 Corinthians 3:18). It’s always good to have a reality check with the Lord or with wise sources such as husbands and curbs.

With hope,
