Character Traits Aren’t Just for Kids
Being recognized for good character can remind us of elementary school award ceremonies, but character development is a life-long marker of faith (1 Thessalonians 4:4). So, lately I’ve been working on further growth of my character: 1) When I read about the character of God in Scripture, such as He is merciful (Deuteronomy 4:31), I pray, “Lord make me merciful” and I focus on that trait for a period of time. 2) When I’m experiencing an abundance of feelings and the temptation to spill out stress and negativity onto others, I ask the Holy Spirit to grant me the practical traits of self-control and steadfastness (Psalm 62). 3) When I see His fruit in others (Colossians 3 & 4), I spotlight the character trait by saying: “You are kind” or “I admire your contentment.” These observations help me to value character throughout my day. Questions for Reflection: Do I encourage others based on their personality and worldly accomplishments? Or based on their character? Am I drawn to him/her because of his/her personality? Or because of his/her character?
With hope,
