Are You Suffering From Structure-Deficiency?
It’s understandable if you’ve ever pushed back against strict rules, stifling boundaries, or legalism. After all, “commandments” and “doctrines” of men can have an appearance of wisdom and self-discipline; while actually being human-constructed “standards” not found in the Word of God or in the gospel of Jesus Christ (Col. 2:20-23). Sometimes you’re very right and discerning not to comply.
But what if you’ve rejected false rules to such an extent you’re missing out on the benefits of having adequate structure in your life?
Benefits Of Structure
- Your brain receives healing it cannot get in such a loose environment
- Putting more focus on controlling yourself and your life protects you from the danger of trying to control others and theirs
- There is more time in your day to be creative, flexible, laid-back, and relaxed
- Your self-confidence increases because of what you’re accomplishing
- God seems closer because spiritual disciplines help you sense His presence
- Relationships get better because you have more organization to invest in them…and others are getting your best you
- Your body becomes more fit and able because you’re honoring it in orderly ways
- Your children and family feel secure because they know what to generally expect from you
- You worry less because you’re on top of your responsibilities
- You feel less anxious because with regular time with the Lord, you’re tracking His faithfulness and growing your trust in Him
- You feel less enslaved by a need for freedom
- You aren’t so stuck anymore because new organization propels you forward
- You’re proud of the ways you’re combining method with artistry
Can You Still Enjoy Going-With-The-Flow?
- Partner with the Lord for the structure that fits you and your life. It can be very wise to ask others to help you implement it or keep you accountable, but structure works best when it comes from your Holy Spirit-infused mind and spirit. That will allow for as much flexibility and spontaneity as is reasonable.
- Don’t buy into the lie that routine is boring. If you allow the Creator to help you design a creative routine that gives you all the benefits of structure with your personal touch, then you receive the best of both worlds.
- Instead of rebelling against all structure, be motivated to design a balanced lifestyle. Of course, enjoy a mode of operating in which you’re not pinned down by the opinions and regulations of others; but where you’re also not worshiping freedom and flexibility to your own detriment.
“The soul of a lazy man desires, and has nothing; but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.” (Prov. 13:4)
