The Fear of Purity

The idea of purity scares a lot of people. Many believe purity means you have to be perfect…or that you can’t have normal hormones…or that it’s something for “the really Christian” people. Here’s the Truth:  Purity is possible for everyone who has hormones (which is everyone). So, why would anyone want purity?

Purity Defined

First, as a Believer in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, you have been given the best “status” of all – a purity status (Titus 2:14). You have been made as white as snow (Isaiah 1:18) and Jesus presents you holy in His sight (Col. 1:22). Purity is not something you develop in your own power (Prov. 20:9). Your pure God (2 Sam. 22:27, Hab. 1:13, 1 Jn. 3:3) creates purity in you (Ps. 51:10, Mal. 3:3); He wants to help you protect it (Ps. 119:9; Acts 15:9; Rom. 6:19); and He fills your willing body with it (Mt. 5:8, 2 Cor. 11:2, 1 Tim. 1:5, Phil. 4:8).

Finally, the next time someone asks you what purity means, you can say: “It’s the result of a pure God at work inside of His people like me!”

Feeling Disqualified

Do you think that some people belong to the Purity Country Club and that you can never be a member? You believe that your past choices and experiences, or that your thoughts and interests exclude you from Purity Club membership. You assume purity is something for the holy people or the boring people. Well, there is no such thing as a Purity Country Club, and anything that makes purity sound exclusive or unappealing is a lie. God works His purity inside of anyone who asks. He is your connection to purity and He will continually wipe the slate clean for you.

Purity For Women

Whether you are a teenage girl, or a woman of any age, never forget this: purity will make you beautiful. Dedicate yourself to this holy calling (1 Thess. 4:7).

Purity For Men

Whether you are a teenage guy or a grown man, never forget this: purity will earn you respect. Live in a way that will command the respect of outsiders (1 Thessalonians). Purity is an on-going freedom and strength from God.
