Book Review: 31-Day Devotionals For Life

Looking for a good devotional book? P & R Publishing Company (aligned with the Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms) recently launched a 31-Day Devotional series covering topics ranging from chronic illness to doubt to money. Selections from this series would be excellent for teens and young adults as well, such as the ones addressing addictive habits, anxiety, and people-pleasing. These reasonably priced booklets are written and edited by seasoned Biblical counselors and each one includes additional topical resources. Below is the list of titles, along with a note on each, that may help you choose one or more.

Current Titles

  • Addictive Habits, Changing For Good – Click here for a review on this book that has tools for anyone wanting to get rid of a bad habit.
  • After An Affair, Pursuing Restoration – Even if this is not your story specifically, this could be a useful read for awareness and prevention, supporting a loved one, or even to help you rebound after emotional distraction.
  • Anger, Calming Your Heart – Not only is this devotional recommended for facing the matter of anger, but an excellent, auditory teaching you could listen to as a companion to this book is the Hope + Help Podcast, LIVE for Heart Change with Brad Bigney published on June 15, 2020.
  • Anxiety, Knowing God’s Peace – This author, Paul Tautges, has rich experience studying the Word of God, raising children, and providing counseling in the church for over 20 years. His books are always so helpful for better understanding how Scripture deals with your concerns.
  • Assurance, Resting in God’s Salvation – In an age where anxiety, fear, OCD, and Biblical illiteracy abound, more and more Christians are doubting their salvation. If you relate to this struggle, this book can serve as a great resource for you.
  • Chronic Illness, Walking by Faith – You may have read other works written by fellow sufferers such as Joni Eareckson Tada, who is a fabulous role-model for walking by faith when physical healing doesn’t come. Additionally, by choosing this book by Esther Smith, you will have another experienced, relatable voice for 31 days to remind you of the spiritual dimension of physical suffering.
  • Contentment, Seeing God’s Goodness – Just like so many other books in this series, here you will find deep reflection questions and practical application that is beneficial to any age Christian, at any part of the journey.
  • Doubt, Trusting God’s Promises – In a distracting, highly stimulating world, more and more people find themselves not knowing how to apply the promises of God to the circumstances of the moment. This devotional teaches practical application of His promises.
  • Engagement, Preparing for Marriage – This book can’t take the place of pre-marital counseling of course, but doing a devotional together, like this one, is a wonderful habit with which to start your marriage.
  • Fearing Others, Putting God First – As with all books of this series, the reader of this one will be taken deeply into Biblical passages to better understand just how relevantly Scripture speaks to every modern matter, including worrying about others’ opinions of you.
  • Grief, Walking with Jesus – The author, Bob Kellemen, has spent great time and study on the topic of emotions. He validates and provides hope and beauty when it comes to heavy feelings, including those that come with loss.
  •  Marriage Conflict, Talking as Teammates – It can be so helpful to have a “third party”- even in the form of a book – to guide a couple (even those married a long time) into productive conversations about tricky subjects.
  • Money, Seeking God’s Wisdom – This is a great book to learn that finances isn’t just about money; it’s about wisdom, security, and relationship with God.
  • Pornography, Fighting for Purity – A practical, Christ-centered guide, this study is written by a kind-hearted pastor who refuses to sit by and watch fellow believers lose so much in this battle for their hearts.
