Book Review: The Gospel Centered Parent by Miller, Harrell, and Klumpenhower

Perhaps the most frequently asked question counselors receive from moms is, “Which parenting book would you recommend for me?” While there are a host of solid parenting books available, The Gospel-Centered Parent: Study Guide With Leader’s Notes by Miller, Harrell, and Klumpenhower is Biblical and applicable to a broad range of readers – no matter how old your children are or how many mistakes you’ve already made. Though this book is part of a “Gospel-Centered” book series and is also presented in a group study format, it is perfectly acceptable to read it straight through individually as well.

This Book Will Help You

  • Turn trust away from yourself and onto the Heavenly Father.
  • Recognize fear in your parenting approach.
  • Identify any ways your theology is not translating into your techniques.
  • Scan your behaviors to find the ones that are sending the wrong messages.
  • Deepen gratitude for how much you personally need the Savior.
  • Acknowledge the messiness of your parenting due to your own sins,
  • Increase the amount of time you are spending confessing and repenting.
  • Grow in intimacy with the Lord more than zoning in on your kids.
  • Pray with abandon and purity.
  • Revise your perspective and expectations about your children and their actions.
  • Reconsider the order of when you turn to the Lord and when you respond to your children.
  • Connect with the Holy Spirit before attempting to counsel your teens.
  • Spend time together building His kingdom.
  • Practice a rich display of suffering in front of and with your family.
  • Fight with God’s armor the spiritual battles taking place in your circumstances.
  • Persevere with hope on a daily basis and for the long haul.

Why do you look at the speck in your (child’s) eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? (Mt. 7:3)

With hope,
