Close to the Gospel

The woman who lavishly and boldly poured fragrant oil over the divine Savior (Matthew 26:6-13) approached Him so closely and affectionately that it can almost feel uncomfortable or even sacrilegious to think about. The disciples criticized her for it then, and believers today can wonder about such “extreme” devotion to Christ. As I’ve had to resist feeling any awkwardness or doubts about having an intimate relationship with a Holy God, I remember this passage reveals: a) that when I connect with God for who He is and what He’s done for me, I honor and bless Him (v. 10 & 12), b) that when I comfortably and boldly approach Him, others can see the grace He has for sinners like me (v. 13), and c) that since He said people would always remember this woman for so directly receiving His “Good News,” other family members like myself (Galatians 3:29) can be remembered for leaving the same legacy.

With hope,
