Godly Help for Resisting Porn, Part 1

Porn is so accessible and problematic, many of you have blockers on your devices, accountability in place, and have researched ways to overcome the personal degree of temptation or failures you or a loved one may have in this area. As necessary as those measures are, they are incomplete. Even if you already know what the Bible teaches about immorality, this three-part article will help you go deeper than the basics, and lead you to practical, effective solutions. As you read part 1, you’ll see how the Word of God provides insights, power, motivation, and further steps to change weak habits. Ultimately, you can allow your Bible to produce in you the comprehension and strength needed to experience true freedom and victory from struggles with porn (and other immoral temptations).

Your Attitude about the Bible Makes a Difference

Believing the Immensity of the Bible

Christians often refer to their bible study as “quiet time” or “devotions,” but the Bible doesn’t actually portray itself that way. While being still before the Lord has it’s place, the actual Biblical descriptions of Scripture sound more like this:

  • Commands to be “treasured” and “loved” (Prov. 2:1; Psalm 119:47)
  • Laws to be regarded as the “apple of your eye” and “better than thousands of coins of gold and silver” (Ps. 119:72; Prov. 7:2)
  • Wisdom to be described as your “sister” and understanding as your “nearest kin” (Prov. 7:4)
  • Words of God that are “pure” and “keep you from immorality and seduction” (Prov. 7:5, 30:5, 1 Pet. 1:22, 23)
  • The Word of God that is “living and powerful” and “works effectively in you” (Heb. 4:12, 1 Thess. 2:13)
  • Scripture that is a “discerner of the thoughts and intentions of your heart” (Heb. 4:12)
  • Law of the wise that is “a fountain of life” (Prov. 13:14)
  • Testimonies as “counselors” to be “delighted in” and “clung to” (Ps. 119:24, 31)
  • Statutes as “songs” to be “rejoiced in” (Ps. 119:14, 54)
  • Commandments that “bring back lost sheep” and “increase strength” and “expand hearts” (Ps. 119:28, 32, 176)
  • Precepts that “give life” (Ps. 119:93) and bring together “companions” (Ps. 119:63)
  • His law that is a “hiding place” and “shield” and “brings peace” (Ps. 119:114, 165)

Believing the Service of the Bible

The Bible is more than useful for you; it’s the Source of perfect purity. For example, curiosity may get the better of you sometimes, and you click on a link or stare at something longer than you should. The Word knows that about you and has the only complete antidote for it. (Jas. 1:14-15). Or perhaps you’re already fully addicted to porn. Scripture sees that, and has plenty to offer for that as well. (Prov. 23, Mt. 5:27-30)

There’s a spiritual war waged against you and it uses tactics to chase you away from the Word of God so you won’t have this weapon of the Spirit. The Bible is there to help you and that’s why your time in the Word is always being threatened. (Eph. 6:17)

Satan uses work, people, urgent responsibilities, distractions, busyness, sleep, and lack of discipline to get in the way of reading the Bible or listening to an audio Bible. But dependency upon God’s Word is the most potent tool to keep porn from causing harm to your life.

So, remember the worthiness, timelessness, and divinity of His Book as you approach it for help and change. Porn is one of the fiercest battles this side of heaven right now. Don’t neglect the greatest action plan at your disposal.

Prayer & Blessing

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God … And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us … (Jn. 1:1)
