Hair Pulling – Why is This a Thing?

It’s a real condition (Trichotillomania) that someone in your life could be facing. “Trich” (pronounced “Trick”) causes people to pull out hair – causing bald spots in areas such as the scalp….or noticeable absence of eyelashes or eyebrows.

Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors

Trich is part of a family of conditions referred to as Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRB’s) that, in addition to hair pulling, also include relentless urges to pick at the skin, bite the nails, and other body-focused habits, far beyond what is common.

For years, people have suffered in silence, but greater awareness, support, and compassion will reduce the shame and isolation they may feel – and you can help.

You Can Help

*Understand the fear of rejection that can accompany this condition. Make yourself a safe and approachable person for any loved ones who might be pulling out their hair/eyelashes/eyebrows; picking at their skin; or constantly biting their nails or lips.

*People who experience urges to pull hair or pick skin don’t want to be defined by this condition. Help them feel valuable.

*Pray for and with those who pull out great amounts of their hair or incessantly pick at their skin. They are at risk for feeling alone, isolated, and depressed.

*Both anxiety-producing and calm environments can trigger irresistible urges in people who suffer from this condition to pull or pick – so faith-filled, enduring prayer…counseling…and a good support system are crucial.

*Scripture offers much that can be applied to modern conditions such as Trich. For example, Jairus’ daughter was 12-years old when he asked Jesus to heal her. And before He did so, Jesus calmed the girl’s father by telling him not to be afraid and to believe (Luke 8:40-56).  And those who are learning how to manage their BFRB’s can speak powerful verses to themselves such as “I am more than a conqueror through Him who loves me(Rm. 8:37) and “I do not have to be anxious about anything when I present my requests to God.” (Phil. 4:6), and I am learning to be content whatever my circumstances. (Phil. 4:11).
