The Role of Dogs & Emotional/Mental Health

All the arguments seem in favor of the concept. Why not get an adorable, loyal, four-legged companion to bring comfort and delight, especially in times of depression, anxiety, loss, etc.? After all, dogs are man’s best friend for a reason; and today’s world is fast-paced, anxiety-producing, harsh, and lonely. In particular, the next generation has latched onto the concept of emotional support animals, and at times these young people really struggle to understand how this could be anything other than the perfect solution for their needs.

Certainly, there are times when dogs are a most appropriate idea either officially trained as an emotional support animal, or simply as a pet. And yes, taking care of an animal can be a wonderful opportunity to learn responsibility and care-giving. But that doesn’t mean they are always the right decision or that they should be an instant addition to your family.

Before such a decision is made, there are two areas of concern worth exploring.

Interpersonal Skills

  • Are there social shortcomings that need to be improved before the distraction of taking care of an animal becomes the priority?
  • Is there a chance that having a pet will be used to cope with difficult emotions rather than developing emotional intelligence?
  • Will important aspects of doing fellowship with the Body of Christ and investing in personal community take a back seat to time spent with the animal?

Character

  • Would there be a greater benefit to waiting for a pet in order to build resilience against instant gratification?
  • Is there sufficient room in the budget for the costs of owning an animal?
  • Will others be unfairly expected to sacrifice their needs because of the presence of this animal?
  • Has insistence of being allowed to have a pet/emotional support animal surpassed any goals of becoming thoughtful, honorable, wise, godly, mature, etc?

So, before rushing to take on a furry friend – take time to pray, examine your motives, consider the timing, check the progress of your personal goals, and be sensitive to the lives of others it will impact. Then you will know if it’s right to take that step.

…comfort abounds through Christ.” (2 Cor. 1:5)
