Summer Series for Students: The Gospel
Maybe it seems simple and straightforward to call yourself a Christian. Your family may be Christian and so you go to church, worship, and believe in God. Some of you attend Christian school and hear a lot about Christianity there. Christmas and Easter help you better understand His divine birth and resurrection and why Christians believe Jesus is the Son of God. But, what exactly is the gospel and how does it all connect?
The Truth about the Gospel of Jesus Christ
To speak of the Gospel may seem happy and relieving, but its true implications run much deeper than many realize.
The Only Solution to Sin
Thanks to sin, you’re not a pretty good person. Neither is anyone else you know. Being left in such a sinful state is bad news because sin leads to complete self-destruction on earth and isn’t allowed in heaven. But the Gospel (Good News) of Jesus Christ means He paid the punishment for your sin so you could be freed from this doom and promised eternity in heaven (your salvation). (Romans 3:10, 26, John 3:16)
The Most Worthy Gift
An extraordinary gift such as the gospel deserves an engaged, profoundly grateful response from you the recipient. But, the world is full of distractions that compete for your time and heart and you are free to forget about the Gospel and drift away from it. Give the Gospel a high place of importance in your life so it will remain the motivator of your thinking, feeling, and being. (Psalm 46:10, Proverbs 4:23, Isaiah 52:7, Luke 11:8, Philippians 3:8, Hebrews 2:1)
The Answer for Everything
Even if none of the influences of your life are pointing you back to what the gospel means for your present and your future, it’s up to you to take personal responsibility for recalling the truth. The only person who can take ownership for your faith is you. Do others see you as a Christian because you do Christian things like camp or small group? Or do they know you’re a Christian because you understand what it means that all of your needs have already been and will continue to be perfectly met in Christ? (Psalm 78:37-38, Philippians 4:19)
The Perfect Modern Way to Live
The world’s claim that Christians need to be more relevant is said from a place of misjudgment about reality, and today’s glorification of activism is deceitful. Don’t fall for these traps. There’s no greater cause than the gospel and Jesus is the only justifiable Activist, building His Kingdom on earth. You’re a revolutionary when you declare your salvation and display the Spirit of Christ living inside of you and producing His good work. (Romans 3:26, 1 Corinthians 1:18-25, Galatians 5;22-23)
Prayer & Blessing
Diligence is man’s precious possession (Prov. 13:27) and the Lord brings back the captivity of His people (Psalm 15:7).
