Summer Series for Students: Work

Summer’s coming to an end and you’re about to transition yet again to another season of school and work. Swirling around you is pressure to perform and temptation to consume. The constant working and consuming cycle is taunting you and like the writer of Ecclesiastes you’re tempted to say, “vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” So, how can you find balance and feel peace?

Truth about Work

  • Endlessly comparing your work to the work of others is highly flammable fuel for misery. Daily remind yourself that God uniquely makes and enables each person to contribute to His purposes according to His will and by the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
  • Commit to learning a Biblical worldview about work. Ask a godly, experienced person how they prevent burnout and find the right ratio of work and rest.
  • Increase self-awareness by tracking past successes and failures and receiving feedback from others so you can find the right rhythms and habits that work best for you.
  • Read the book of Colossians and journal verses that can free you from people-pleasing, protect you from finding your worth in your work, and give you a new and encouraging focus.
  • Rise above materialistic ways, resist being targeted as a consumer, and aim instead toward having godly and productive character.

Prayer & Blessing

Diligence is man’s precious possession (Prov. 13:27) and He is the One you ultimately work for (Colossians 3:23).

With hope,
