What Are Your Singing Words?

You may have a habit of considering the power of what you say (Prov. 16:24), and you may even remember verses about controlling your tongue in speech (Prov. 10:19), but for those of you who sing (whether it’s in the shower or on the stage), have you considered the daily sum of your singing words?

Your Singing Words Mean A Lot To God

Singing to God gives Him the highest exaltation for who He is (Ex. 15:1) and offers you an outlet to express the uncontainable joy that only He can give (Ps. 5:11).

Your Singing Words Connect You To Him

God purposely requested singing in His Word for His people to tell stories about His works (Numbers 21:17; Deut. 31:19). As such, you can sing about what God has done for you –  remembering how he has saved you (Ps. 96:2) and recommitting your devotion to Him (Ps.61:8).

God sings (Zeph. 3:17). What if He is singing over you at this very moment? What can you sing back to Him?

Your Singing Words Can Be Good For You

Singing songs to God is good for your soul (Ps. 108:1) and stabilizes your emotions (Ps. 147:1, Is. 35:10). Singing lyrics of songs that reinforce biblical values are part of transforming your mind (Rom. 12:2) by moving your thoughts beyond yourself to focus upon Jesus.

Singing your prayers is a good way to freshen them up.

Prayer songs…are something we can sing in our car, raising our voices…and making a fool of ourselves…crying out to God.”

-Michael W. Smith

Your Singing Words Can Be Good For Others

Make the songs you sing tell the truth about who you are and what you believe because others are often listening. What you are singing is far more important than how you sing. Paul and Silas are famous for singing hymns in prison (Acts. 16:25), and it’s doubtful that they sang very well in those circumstances. What you remember is that they sang praise; not how they sang it.

Sing to the Lord, bless His Name. (Psalm 100:1)
