When Someone You Love’s in Bondage
It’s often thought that the kindest way to help someone who’s in bondage to an unhealthy lifestyle or to a certain sin struggle is to be a good listener and validate how hard the battle is. Then, if that doesn’t work, “tough love” is another approach. But I’m struck by the Apostle Paul encouraging me to be in a personal condition of humility before correcting someone who’s “in the snare of the devil.” That is, for those in opposition to holiness to “come to their senses,” what they need most from me is the confession that I’m just as weak as they are. That I, too, am vulnerable to being taken captive to do the will of the Enemy. It’s in this type of humbly communicated correction that the pathway is carved out for God to grant repentance and teach truth (2 Timothy 2:25-26).
