Who has More Anxiety?
Have you ever heard some version of: “You can’t understand how bad my anxiety is,” or “I don’t think you realize how hard I’m working,” or “You don’t know what it’s like to feel this way.” It can be surprising to experience one-upping from others when it comes to psychological challenges and to feel critical when others are in competition over whose mental health struggles or personal circumstances are worse. But, upon reflection, I unearth a similar tendency in myself to believe my relationship losses as more painful, my rejection letters as more cruel, my stress as more intense, my physical capabilities as more limited, etc. So, I strive to follow Paul’s solution for a more gracious rivalry: “Outdo one another in showing honor” (Romans 12:10). That verse disciplines me to dwell not upon my anxiety, pain, sadness, losses, limitations, etc., but to dwell upon how I can honor you as you endure yours.
With hope,
