Book Review: Speak Truth In Your Heart by Sarah Mally
Sarah Mally’s book, Speak Truth In Your Heart: Replacing Lies with God’s Word is chock-full of verses, exercises, and great stories to encourage you to fill your mind and heart with Scripture and to help you not believe lies.
Is This Book For You?
This is not a quick read. And that’s a good thing.
And you may not totally agree with some of Sarah’s opinions. But that’s ok because she teaches you a way to grow closer to the Lord (not to her) and that’s what matters.
You could buy the book and have it as a go-to for helping you become more proficient at applying Scripture to problematic thoughts.
You could simply read the review below, and let that suffice or be a start for improving this area of your life (though Sarah goes into much more depth).
Book Highlights
*Don’t try to memorize verses for the words; instead allow verses to become yours in such a specific, personal way that God’s thinking becomes your thinking. (chapters 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11,14, 15, 16)
*Let your desire for victory and freedom help you tolerate the discipline of strategy and accountability, for your best good. (chapters 2, 13, 14, 15)
*Understand the gospel more deeply so that you have more astonishment for it, which will lead to greater faith and peace. (chapters 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 15)
*Acknowledge, confess, and connect your insecurities and missed opportunities directly to your thoughts. Then replace them with truth according to the Lord. (chapters 7, 8, 12, 15)
*If the emotions you are experiencing are causing you to be moody, selfish, discouraged, angry, irritated etc. rather than being used to bless others and bring Him glory, there is no one who understands better what you’re feeling than Jesus. Nor is there anyone better suited to help you. He will ask you to obey His Word for this change to come about. (chapters 9, 10, 12)
*When it comes to modesty, purity, dating, sexuality, and marriage, the modern culture is pushing hard against Biblical standards. But the Lord is for relationships and the Word is exactly the place to find His way, support, encouragement, and strength to secure your mind and stay the course. (chapters 15, 16)
“…if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things.” (Phil. 4:8b)
